Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG)

EGCG, as it is also known, is the most abundant catechin in green tea and is also a potent antioxidant. Its power as an antioxidant is just one of many benefits. From Alzheimer’s disease to AIDS-related dementia, EGCG has been linked to preventing amyloid plaques from forming in the brain. In 2005 researchers studying Alzheimer’s disease in mice found that using EGCG as a dietary supplement helped to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease by blocking the misfolding of proteins in the brain.  Then in 2006 researchers found that EGCG can bind to T cell receptors and help to prevent the binding of HIV-1 thus preventing the virus from entering the cell. Ongoing research into EGCG has also indicated that many neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, may also be treated and prevented with EGCG.  In 2010 researchers discovered that EGCG helped to reduce death of dopaminergic cells which is the known cause of Parkinson’s disease.
